A three-part DIY guide for replacing the front brake pads and rotors on a Volkswagen Jetta MkV. This is a straightforward job if you have basic tools and a safe place to work.
What You'll Need
- Floor jack and jack stands (never rely on just a jack)
- 17mm socket for lug bolts
- 7mm hex/allen key for caliper guide pins
- Brake caliper wind-back tool (piston compression)
- Torque wrench
- Brake cleaner spray
- Anti-squeal grease (for pad backing plates)
- New pads and rotors (measure rotor diameter before ordering)
Overview
Part 1 — Removing the wheel, caliper, and carrier. Inspecting the old hardware.
Part 2 — Removing the old rotor, cleaning the hub surface, and fitting the new rotor.
Part 3 — Fitting new pads, compressing the caliper piston, reassembly, and bedding-in procedure.

Important Notes
- Torque lug bolts to 120 Nm after the car is back on the ground
- Caliper bracket bolts: 175 Nm
- Caliper guide pin bolts: 35 Nm
- Always bed in new pads with 5–6 moderate stops from ~60 km/h before hard braking
- Inspect brake fluid — if it's dark, do a flush while you're at it
